Search Results window missing (Find in Files)

Post by Stark Raving »

I set up Textpad 5.4.2 on a new Windows 7 Pro 64-bit machine (no errors on install and minimal configuration post-install), but I cannot get the Find in Files feature to do anything. The Search Results window never appears as a result of a search or trying to manually display it (Shift-F11). It's not appearing as a standalone window, a tab with the document tabs, or a nested window. Normal searching works fine within open documents.

I have two monitors (as I did on my old Vista install), but the window does not appear in either monitor. I've tried various Windows move/maximize tricks intended to reveal off-screen windows, but to no avail. I also ran as admin just in case it needed extra permission the first time it ran.

Note: I tried to search the forum for similar problems, but the search feature seems not to work on the site, as even very simple searches return 0 results (Firefox 11, IE 9). I browsed back over a year and found one similar post from Feb 2011, though that user saw error messages, but no responses to the post ().

Thanks![/url]

I should mention that I installed first as a normal user, then uninstalled/reinstalled as admin, and I ran the program both as a normal user and as an admin.

Resolved

Post by Stark Raving »

I was able to resolve this. Under Configure->Preferences->View, I unchecked the default setting for "Dockable log windows->Search Results", and the results showed up in a tab when doing a "Find in Files". Rechecking the setting caused the result window to appear as expected in the dockable window.

Crisis averted!

I still can't search the forum though...

I searched the forum for "dockable" and found 51 results, including this post, so I'm not sure why you can't search. Thanks for following up with your solution though.

If you only use "Search" on top of the page the forums are not searched. You can miss the hint above the result for "Search in forums".

Thanks all. I was using the forum search, but I guess my search terms were too general and it filters out common terms. My first search for "find in files", which is the name of the feature having the issue, yielded no results, and I usually start with general terms and get more specific as I see the results.
