The IBM mainframe editor has a very useful facility using a prefix area (5 characters) on each line. This normally just contains the line number, but commands can also be placed there.
For example CC on first and last lines to be copied and then B (before) or A (after) to mark the destination. Likewise MM for move.
Lines can be hidden (H999 for hide all, H10 to hide 10 lines, HH and HH to mark a block of lines). If all are hidden then a Find will show lines containing the text while leaving all other lines hidden (marked with a line that says "50 lines hidden, say)
As more and more people use widescreen monitors the extra at the beginning of each line should not be a problem.
