Instead of opening the Search menu, Textpad starts recording a macro.
The other ALT keys (F, E, V, T, M, C, W, H) work fine, but not ALT S.
I verified that this is not a keyboard problem.
Preferences says that ALT S is assigned to "Prefix", but I do not know why, or how to change it.
Also, keyboard preferences are set to Microsoft Applications.
I used TextPad for years on 32 bit Windows XP, never saw this problem.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I have listed all the key assignments for TP (win7 64 bit) and Alt+S is not assigned and I do not think was; my keyboard compatability is set to microsoft.
"Alt+S" opens the search menu on my machine fine.
If alt+s is assigned then the preference-> keyboard has the functionality to clear the assignment; just display the assigned setting, click on the current key assignment and "remove".

Hello ACRobin, and thank you for that quick response.
In Configure | Preferences | Keyboard, I can enter Alt+S in the "Press new shortcut key:" box, and below it, TextPad tells me that this sequence is currently assigned to "Prefix key".
However, I cannot find the Prefix key command, even if I set Categories to ALL. The Commands skip from Preferences to RightMarginDec.
If I could find it, I would like nothing more than to reset it

"Prefix key" isn't a key assignment in itself, but an indication that the key is the first key in a two character shortcut. For example, the shortcut key for Configure->Preferences is Ctrl+Q, P. In this case, Ctrl+Q is called the prefix key.
On your system you've somehow managed to assign a command to Alt+S, followed by another character. To find which one it is, click "List" in the keyboard preferences dialog. Then you can remove the assignment and Alt+S will be back to normal.

I never knew what the List button did in the keyboard preferences dialog. OK, I set the Categories to "ALL", clicked the List button, checked the output, and, lo and behold...

...somehow I had managed to assign Search Multiple files to ALT+S+I.
I never noticed there was a problem, because that is exactly the set of keys you normally press to bring up the Find In Files dialog.
I must have messed this up when I reinstalled TextPad.
