New Document Uses Different Default Syntax

I have read the first 5 pages of this forum, and searched all forums, but I'm not finding the answer. I have applied a syntax and colors to a class, and when I save, I see the colors apply and all is well. But when I choose File, New, the font and colors go to the default settings. When I save it, it goes to my chosen syntax settings.

How do I set it up so that a new document will default to my chosen syntax file? Do I have to duplicate my colors/fonts etc. selections to each new document? I've closed all windows, and reset my syntax file settings, then exited Textpad, re-opened, and New still defaults incorrectly.

Please help. Thanks!

Configure/Preferences/File, change the Default file extension. New files will open with the file extension entered here.

Ahh, there's the rub. I'm using Universe Basic syntax, which has no particular extension. The file names are just program titles like "POST.ORDERS" or "getUserProfile" - sometimes with an extension and sometimes without. So my default extension is null.

I ended up editing the registry setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Helios\TextPad 5\Document Classes\Default

... and copying the Colors and SyntaxFile entries from the Universe Items section.

If there's a better way, please let me know.

I did try to control the Default highlight of a NEW document before and the colors were automatically those of the Configure/Preferences/File, "Default file extension" as Helios mentioned above, which was 'TXT' in my case.

I just deleted that 'TXT' to leave it blank and a NEW document had the colors of the Configure/Preferences/Document Classes/Default > my Colors set up.

I have checked your method:

It is in a REG_BINARY format that cannot be modified with a copy & paste from/to an external file, only by editing each HEX word! That would take forever to figure out where goes each color/item! I don't know how you managed to know and to do the changes.

I hope just deleting the "Default file extension" is the better way you are looking for.
