We haven't seen this particular error message before, but a search on Google reveals a possible solution:

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. However, I don't really want to (and shouldn't have to) turn UAC off.

To clarify, this is happening for me in Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit when I right click on a file I wish to open in TextPad and select the "TextPad" option from the context popup menu. If I right click and select "Open with > TextPad" it works OK. But I should be able to use the first option.

Other applications I have which provide Windows explorer shell integration like this work fine, so it suggests a problem with TextPad's shell integration.

Helios,

Thanks for your reply, apologies for the length of time it's taken me to get back to this. I appreciate your proposed workaround but I too don't want to turn UAC off I also agree with Darren's point below -

Windows 7 context menu, file associations and UAC

Post by Grindlay »

Annoyingly, with UAC turned on, when I double-click a *.txt file I get :

Image

(this image is nicked from Wikipedia, actual message is for textpad.exe, not updater.exe)

And worse than that, when I use the context menu on a *.txt file (right click > Textpad) I get :

This is in spite of fiddling with all the program compatibility options, Run As Administrator etc. Any chance of a fix rather than a workaround ?

Hello again.

TextPad has been my editor of choice for well over 10 years now so it's extremely disappointing that this issue is spoiling my experience of it on Windows 7.

Please Helios, can you reply with an official response on this issue and seriously consider looking into fixing it as a priority. I'm sure it will be affecting most if not all Windows 7 users, even if they aren't necessarily going to the trouble of reporting it as an issue.

Hi,

Is there any chance of an official response to this issue please? I'm not the only person frustrated by it and disappointed that there has been no acceptable response yet.

Do you accept that this *is* an issue with TextPad?
Do you know what the cause is?
Do you have any idea when we are likely to expect a fix?

Regards,

Darren
