Limit multiple instances to 2?

Is there a way to limit the multiple instances to 2? I almost always have 2 instances open, but it'd be great if I could stop myself from accidentally opening a third.

Turn off the option to "Allow multiple instances to run", on the General Preferences page, and then start another instance from the Command Line, as below:

start textpad -m
