How to scroll using keyboard, without losing selection

Post by mikez302 »

I noticed that if I press Ctrl+up or Ctrl+down, I can scroll the document.

It is convenient to be able to do this, but I noticed that if I have some text selected, it gets unselected. This only happens if I try to scroll using the keyboard, not using the mouse wheel.

Is there any way to scroll with the keyboard, without losing my selection?

There are several ways to scroll without losing the selection in textpad.

0. Select the text, Press Scroll Lock and use the Page Up/Down buttons to scroll up and down.
1. Use the mouse wheel (logitech or MS mice have this) to scroll up or down.
2. Create a horizontal split window and scroll around in the bottom half while leaving the selected text undisturbed in the top half.

I'm sure there are more ways I haven't thought of. I'll leave those to others.

I noticed that in TextPad Keystroke compatibility mode I can
select some text, leave it selected and proceed to scroll up and
down (Up/Down keys) while the Ctrl key is pressed down.

The Textpad behaviour you describe is not consistent with what I'm seeing. I can't replicate the problem.

What are your TextPad settings?

thank you, dtoader. I tried solution 0 and it worked. I never noticed that before. It is extremely rare for my scroll lock key to do something useful for me. That is helpful, but I would still prefer to scroll one line at a time.

There are a bunch of settings in TextPad. Is there anything specific you need to know? In case this may be helpful, I am using version 5.3.1. In my keyboard preferences, I have Ctrl+Up assigned to LineScrollDown and Ctrl+Down assigned to LineScrollUp. I can't remember if it was that way by default or if I set them like that.

I figured out a solution. If I have scroll lock on, I can scroll up and down without losing the selection. I have no idea why this works.

Logitech and Microsoft? About 99% of mice of any brand have it now.
