It is a DOS command run from Tools | External Tools.

Please?

I guessed Tools | Stop, but though this gives a message in the Tools window, it does not seems actually terminate the tool - menu Stop remains enabled and tool disabled.

Not enough information.

"It is a DOS command" is still rather vague. Is there some reason you cannot provide the exact command, with parameters, etc?

Are you taliking about a command in the MS-DOS Command Shell? Is it an internal DOS command? Is is an external DOS command? Is it not a DOS command, but a command line for a program that runs in DOS? Is it really DOS or is it a Windows Command?
Are you using RUN or START or command.com?

Try pressing CTL-Break, if that does not work, press CTL-C, if that does not work, press CTL-ALT-DEL and see if you can stop the routine from the Task Manager.

Here's what TP tells me:

I'm surprised it makes a difference to what I should use to terminate it...

It looks like you are running a batch file named "Do 4 Make.bat". So, more info is needed.

So now, it depends on what is inside the batch file. How many lines are there, and what are they doing? Which one are you trying to halt? What are you trying to stop? For example, your batch file could be opening a copy of Quicken. That could not be stopped, but could only be exited normally. But a CTL-C might make the batch file stop when Quicken was closed. Can you provide the contents of the batch file?

Since you are running a batch file, these processes are probably running in a Command Window. For some reason I don't know, pressing ALT-F4 will not close a Command Window, so you would need to click on the "X" in upper right corner, or click on the icon in the upper left cornet, and then click on "Close"
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,

None in particular.

The exection of the external tool.

There are many different batch files, running various command-line (not GOU) .exe's.

None I can see. I see only the Textpad tool window.

Sorry, I don't know of any "silver bullet" to close unknown commands in a batch file. CTL-ALT-DEL to the Task Manager would be my best guess.
Perhaps someone else will come up with a solution for you.

If you remove the check mark to "Capture output", then you may be able to see the windows of the processes, and may be able to kill them from there. That will probably lose the main purpose of the tool, but you may want to do this while trying to troubleshoot a problem with the tool.

Closing TextPad will cancel running tools. You will be prompted to OK.
