Opening multiple instances.

Post by zen100 »

Hi everyone.

I've been using Textpad for a while, and previously, when I click on a file, it always opens up in a new instance of textpad, until recently. It decides to open it up in the same instance with different windows.

I checked the Configuration option of "Allow multiple instances to run", with no effect. The version is 4.7.2.

Would anyone be able to share some light on this?

thanks in advance.

Some configuration settings won't take if a document is open.

Close all other copies of TextPad
Closed all documents including the blank default document
Configure/Preferences/General
Put a checkmark in box to Allow Multiple instances to run
Click on Apply, OK, exit out normally and close TextPad.
Open Textpad again, and your settings should be stored properly.
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob

I'm having the exact opposite problem. I want any text file to automatically open in the SAME instance of TP that's already running, but instead, they keep opening in brand-new instances.

I've followed Bob's advice for closing all documents and then trying to apply my preferences, but turning off the "Allow Multiple Instances" option just doesn't seem to have any effect.

TP v5.3 on a new Vista-64 SP2 machine. I've used this feature in TP successfully on an XP-SP3 machine for quite awhile.

Anyone else experiencing this or have any advice?

There is a command line parameter that could do that:
-m Starts another instance, regardless of the setting for "Allow multiple instances"

Make sure that your command line does not include -m. Check your shortcuts and the system default command line for the document types that trigger TextPad.

Thanks for the ridiculously fast response Bob!

Double-checked all my shortcuts and file associations ... no -m switch involved anywhere.

I did, however, notice something odd. Although the "Replace Notepad" option was selected in TextPad, the Windows Control Panel (Default Programs/Set Associations) still listed Notepad as the default editor for txt files.

Once I set TextPad as the default program for txt files in the Windows Control Panel, the "Multiple Instances" option in TextPad Preferences started working exactly as expected. I can turn it on and off and it seems to be functioning 100% correctly.

My only potential concern at this point is that I think I remember reading something (quite awhile ago) about there being potential difficulties/conflicts when manually setting TextPad as the default program for an extension in Windows rather than letting TextPad replace the setting itself. Does that make sense? Does that sound familiar to anyone else?

Anyway, thanks again Bob. Although the -m switch didn't resolve my problem (or, more accurately, create my problem), you got me pointed in the right direction. Much appreciated!
