Cannot install Ver 5

Post by victorf »

I just discovered that there was a new version of TP. I have been running 4.7.2 for quite some time. I downloaded the 5.0 distro and tried to install it with no luck. :( Here are the error messages:

First message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource
that is unavailable

Comment:
I have no networked resources and I am the only user.

Second message :
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder
containing the installation package 'TextPad 4.7.msi in the
box below.

Use source:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_is5103\

Comment:
Don't know what this is all about. After clicking OK I get the following:

Third Message:
Error 1714, The older version of TextPad 5 cannot be removed.
Contact your technical support group.

Comment:
I am contacting my technical support group and asking someone for help.

Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

First of all, I recommend that you exit from TextPad, and then remove all versions of TextPad 4 and 5 from your computer.

You will need to implement the following procedure.

From the Start menu choose:

1. Control panel
2. Add or Remove Programs
3. Select TextPad
4. Click on Remove

Download and install a copy of TextPad 4.7.3 from our web site.

http://www.textpad.com/download/index.html

After you have installed 4.7.3, download and install a fresh copy of TextPad 5.0.3

I hope this helps.

bbadmin,

Thanks for the reply.

After uninstalling my current version and installing 4.7.3 do I need to uninstall that version before installing 5.0.3?

Well, your suggestion to uninstall the current version of TP did not work. I basically got the same error messages from the uninstaller that I reported in the original post.

What can I do now?

Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

First of all, I recommend that you manually delete all the file associations you may have made in TextPad, under Configure/Preferences/Associated Files. This will have the effect of retaining the default settings for file extensions in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, when you follow the instructions below. You will lose your personal configurations, so these will need to be re-done. If you are a registered user you will also need to reinstall your license.

Next: Exit from TextPad, and completely remove TextPad 4 from your computer.

You will need to implement the following procedure.

From the Start menu choose:

1. Control panel
2. Add or Remove Programs
3. Select TextPad
4. Click on Remove

Next:

From the Start menu choose

1. Run
2. Type "REGEDIT.EXE" and click OK
3. From the Registry editor Edit menu select "Find"
4. Type "textpad" in the "Find what" section
4. Check the options "Keys, Values and Data"
5. Click "Find Next" and Delete, until all references have been deleted

Install TextPad 5.

I guess you did not understand what I was saying in my last post. I attempted the add/remove thing at your suggestion and it errored out with exactly the same messages that I have in the original post to this thread. Therefore, I am unable to proceed with your suggestions. :(

What's going on here? This is a seriously flawed installation procedure if I have to trash all my work just to update. Perhaps Helios Software should take a long hard look and come up with a non-destructive update method for their licensed users. This is NOT exceptable.

I concur with victorf.

I've scoured the registry and searched for every file for Helios and textpad and I still get the 1714 error message when trying to install version 5.

I went back to try and install 4.7.3 and that won't install either.

So now I'm completely dead in the water.

Help!

If the installation folder for TextPad 5 hasn't already been deleted in Explorer, then manually delete it. Also delete the folder at the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Application Data\Helios\TextPad\5.0

When you searched the Registry for TextPad, did you check the options for "Keys, Values and Data"?

Have you got the latest version of the Windows installer?

If not, try to manually download and install the latest Windows Installer from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Come on. This is the same information that is already in this thread that has already been reported NOT TO WORK.

In short, yes, I tried all the things you mention and the error still persists.

1) I cleaned out everything as you specified.
2) I started the install of version 5
3) I get this error message:

Error 1714. The older version of TextPad5 cannot be removed. Contact your Technical support group.

Obviously there are other text editor solutions out there. How much time do you expect people to devout to trying to install your product before moving on?

The information in the following link helped me to reinstall Textpad under similar circumstances.

I am the original poster of this topic. The easiest solution is to junk TextPad and move on to something better, possibly ****. As a registered user of TP for many years, I must say I am upset at the attitude at Helios.

Similiar Issue

Post by EmbSysPro »

Hi,
I've had the exact same problem but as it turns out I am also partly the cause of the problem. There are a couple issues at work here.

1.) Microsoft changed that way the Windows installer works so that in some instances it now requires that you keep a copy of the .msi file. In order to facilitate this the installer records the location of the temporary directory where it placed the .msi file.

2.) I needed to recover some hard dish space so I deleted everything from my temporary directories, even the hidden ones. And when I did that I removed the TextPad install directory that the Windowws installer had made a link to.

Usually the Windows installer wants to hide this from you so it will place the .msi file in a hidden location for later use. If you delete this file after the Windowws installer has recored in the registry, then you are hosed.

The previous post about deleting the TextPad program directory and all registry entries concerning TextPad is correct. You must make Window forget everything that it knows about TextPad in oder to reinstall TextPad.

Well that's what I had to do. And it worked.

Good luck...
