Select w/ mouse intermittently not working in v. 5

Post by BigJohn »

Today I replaced version 5.1.0 with 5.2.0 in the hope that the newer version fixed this annoying intermittent bug. Not such luck.

When I select text with the mouse, sometimes it selects only the first part of the text --the first two or three lines-- and stops! TextPad is the only application doing this on my computer, so it has to be TextPad. When it occurs, I toggle word-wrap but that doesn't make any difference. Toggling block-select mode also makes no difference; it occurs either way.

I have to resort to selecting with the Shift key and the arrow keys. It is incredibly inconvenient. It's a real productivity-killer.

The OS is Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, service pack 2. It's an HP/Compaq laptop with 3 GB of RAM and an HP laser-mouse. Have tried different mouse pads and surfaces to no avail. It's got to be TextPad. Again, TextPad is the only app. on this computer doing this.

I have been a licensed TextPad user and evangelist for nearly ten years, in no small part due to its reliability, so I'm surprised that such a basic problem (with select) would occur. Thinking about going back to version 4 while it's still available.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any workaround?

BigJohn,

I've used TextPad about as long as you and never had this problem. You've tried different mouse pads and surfaces, but have you tried a different mouse? Also, try quitting any background programs you may have running. Check your taskbar notification area, startup folder, and msconfig settings to see what's being loaded. For example, I had problems with using the mouse to scroll in TextPad that turned out to be caused by a utility called KatMouse. You seem convinced that it's TextPad but unless everyone else has this problem, it's TextPad on your computer that's the issue.

I just have to add that i been using textpad for many years now and never seen this problem either. So i believe the problem might occur because of another program or something running on your computer.

As ak47wong saig using msconfig you might be able to identify if there is another program that is causing this problem.

HA! :D Can you believe it? I've been struggling with this problem for months and no sooner did I make that post than I discovered that the problem stopped when I close out Windows Media Player 9.00.00.3354! That has fixed it three times now!

(See how aggravating that problem was? It happened when I got to a point where I could relax and put some good music on.)

I just started Windows Media Player to see if it would cause the bug to come back, and it did not occur for the first few minutes. Windows Media Player has to be running for a while.

If the problem recurs I will give msconfig a whirl. Thanks for turning me on to that. And let it be known that turning off Windows Media Player is the workaround.

So basically what you are saying is "don't listen to music while using textpad":)
You could try a update to media player 10 or 11 to see if that works better or user another media player.

I don't think this issue is confined to 5.x. I still use 4.7.3 and this happen to me whenever the CPU is under a significant load (e.g., when the virus scanner or our companies "update" tools are running).
