replacing/deleting text in a line

how would you replace /delete the last two characters of a single line of text?

by whatever you want to replace them with (by nothing if you want to delete them.

so lets say i have
"marry had a little lamb name BO"

i would use YZ$ inorder to change to "YZ" ?
