Wait or give up Textpad?

Post by kelvin »

Just a simple question. Will Textpad consider to implement the Unicode in coming version? Please let me know whether I have to wait or give it up. Very sorry I have to say goodbye Textpad if no unicode support. I have used Textpad over 10 years! :(

In what way does Textpad not support Unicode in the way that you want?

When TP opens a Unicode file, it will convert any character that's not supports by the current "Script" (or codepage, or whatever) to a question mark. You can't enter any of those characters either.

Hey, even Notepad can do this, why not TextPad?

I would suggest that if you need Unicode support now then it may be time to give up. The recent updates to TextPad don't suggest (to me at least) that Unicode support is a priority at the moment. There are other products (EmEditor comes to mind* as an example) that do provide good Unicode support quite gracefully.

My approach is that I still use TextPad when appropriate as it has some features that I am just so used to using and other editors don't have them.

I'm always wary of recommending a competing product in this forum but in this case it seems more appropriate as it addresses a shortfall in TP's cababilities
Running TextPad 5.4 on Windows XP SP3 and on OS X 10.7 under VMWare or Crossover.

I use TextPad is not only for text editing, I use its functions such as unlimited bookmarks copy & paste, macro, multiple files searching and replacing, etc. All these functions are excellent short-cut function for me to extract and rebuild the content of web pages. Unfortunately there are quite many web pages are now in unicode encoding. No matter how many and power functions the TextPad has, it is no use if it doesn't support unicode. In fact, unicode is now the trend and we can't avoid it, I think unicode support must be the highest priority and I also believe existing function of TextPad can satisfy and meet 95% of users.
