Strange navigation with long lines

Post by montyhindman »

Create a file with alternating short and long lines. Make sure the long lines are wider than the space in your window.

Position your cursor at the end of one of the long lines. Press the up arrow once and you'll be at the end of the preceding short line. Press the up arrow again and, strangely, you'll jump all the way up to line 1.

I'm using TextPad 5.0.3 on Windows XP.

Is there a solution to this problem?

I too can confirm this behaviour on XP, SP2. I thought it had just been me but I had never figured out what the triggering sequence of events was.

As monty indicates, in a multi-line document, say 10 lines, make line 8 have more characters than can be displayed on screen. Place the cursor at the end of the line and arrow up. The cursor will go up to line 7 as expected and at the end of the line. However if you then arrow up or down it will reset the cursor to first column, first line.
Additionally, the cursor gets "stuck" there until you mouse click elsewhere, arrow left or right or hit the carriage return. Typing text, tabbing etc does not allow you to arrow up or down.

It's been discussed a few times before:

Bug: with curser when jumping lines

New scrolling bug (Textpad 5.0.3)

Apparent bug in 5.03 - cursor relocates to top left

Bug Report: Cursor movement down lines at end of line

The first reports of this bug were back in May and Helios said "it will be fixed in the next maintenance upgrade"...
