Having REALLY annoying problems w/CLASSES (fonts & tabs)

Hi again friends, but first . . . TEXTPAD 5! WOO HOO! Heady.

Okay, I know my way around Texpad fairly well by now, and I am all but certain this is just a mouseclick-of-a-tweak (or registry change). I'm frustrated that in over a week I can't seem to crack it, so here I am.

Oh yes: The discussion of this issue is for Version 4.73.

I had to rebuild my computer following a power outage that fried my hard drive. I have certain (text) classes that are supposed to be custom-configured with
a) Specific tab positions
b) Specific SCREEN fonts
c) Specific PRINTER fonts

This is the first time that I've set up my little CLASSES (following the need to reinstall Textpad) that will not permanently save either my tabs or my fonts. What I have to do is manually go in and change the settings for .TXT (or is it DEFAULT? it's all a blur lol) -- anyway, I can only get the tabs and fonts to show up if I change the settings for EVERYTHING, meaning effectively, I have one choice of settings.

I seem to recall reading somewhere here on the board that this was a registry tweak (?) for those of us who manage to corrupt the (something-or-other) in Textpad that stores these settings.

In any event, HELLLLLLLP.

Oh and . . . I have them associated with the SYN file for TEXT temporarily until I configure them.

I'm on Windows 2000 SP'd up through the Service Pack-to-the-Rollup-to-the-Rollup-to-the-Service Pack 4.

Hello Skye...another user from the past, first Jefffy comes back, now you, I guess the word got out re Versions 5.

As a long time user, I am pleased to say that I have not installed version 5.0 yet, and would encourage you to also wait till at least the next release. Version 4.73 is still very stable, but release of 5 has not been too smooth.

Re your specific problems, if you don't have a copy of your old registry, you will probably need to reenter all of your specs manually. Yes, txt is the default....

Aargh....having Internet problems, need to disconnect..... good luck with your reinstall, be sure to do 4.73....

Bob, that's my point: It does no good tsk. I can't get more than one set of tab/font preferences to recognize, even as the CLASSES themselves are set up and ready. Groan . . .

Howdy,

Well I have done this successfully in the past and I just did it successfully right now, but I cannot guarantee the process as I'm not sure what I did. OK?

Close all open instances of TP.
Open a new instance and close any new blank document if you are set up to open with a new document...i.e., empty window.
Go to preferences and find your class
Make sure your class member is listed properly: *.xtxt
(and, I presume, is not the same as any other member)
Expand the tree and change your preferences.
Click apply.
Close TextPad
Open Textpad and there you are.

I am also waiting for the dust to settle before installing the new version. I figure this release was the 'shut that jerk up' release.

Okay Mo, I'll give it a spin. This sounds very familiar

which makes sense, since I'm all but certain that in my rush to reinstall and use the #1 Program on my machine (the Mighty TEXTPAD)

I'm certain I didn't close out Textpad between each of these steps. Wish me luck and I will dutifully report back!

Sigh. No good friends. It's basically picking up whatever I place under "DEFAULT" and ignoring (everything, tabs + fonts) for all of my classes.

Hate to ask the obvious, but is "apply these settings to all document classes' under default unchecked...or maybe it's checked somewhere else?

EDIT:

Also maybe try deleting the classes from open TP with empty window and starting again.

NEW EDIT:

OK. Challenge time. I just did it successfully again watching carefully.

1st "Apply these settings to all document classes." is unchecked throughout.

2nd Closed all open instances of TP
3. Open TP close the New Document
4. Configure > New Document Class
Name NewClass
Member: *.ntxt (include the asterisk)
...forgot OK or Apply and close
5. Configure > Preferences locate class >Font select Strange Font
Apply, close, close TP Open TP and there I am.

I think that's about what I said before.

Shouldn't that be "No, good friends." Or do you mean you have no good friends? Or do you mean "No good, friends."? Or do you mean your friends are no goods?

Please try this:

From the Configure menu choose:

1. Preferences
2. "+" sign next to Document classes
3. Click on Default (not the plus sign next to it)
4. Uncheck the option "Apply these settings to all document classes"
5. Click Apply
6. Repeat for each document class
7. Click Apply / OK.

You should now be able to configure each document class with its own individual settings.

Believe me, it's been the loss of my beloved TEXTPAD that has crippled my grammer, er, grammar.

I'm not kidding you when I say I cannot work without it. I can't tell you how often I spread the word by the way. There isn't a forum I participate in where I don't at some point say, "You're not using Textpad? Do you just want to spend twice as long (fill in the blank, surfing the internet, sorting columns, composing quick-reference notes, etc.)."

It does no good Stephen. Believe me, I already "checked" this. Oh, and I did so with no document open, just to be sure.

Where exactly is this information being stored? Is it somewhere viewable by Textpad (and SAVABLE)?

I am pretty sure those settings are in the registry. When I get to my machine with TextPAd, I will dump out the Classes data and provide a copy for you. You may be able to edit it for your needs.

If you want to copy/paste to make a registry file, you need to make a registry class first. TextPad does not have one as default. Make the class, open new document, copy/paste into new document, save as filename.reg. Now you should be able to run it.

If you run this reg file, you may want to first rename the current registry key for Document Classes so you can restore if needed

Your class settings will be different, but this may get you started. You probably don't need some of the ones I created, and you may need to locates syntax files that are used. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.

Bob (and everyone) as I retraced my activity with this most recent install I think the problem was that â€” seeking to standardize just the screen color and highlight line â€” I checked "Make this the same for all CLASSES" at some point.

That was a BIG MISTAKE!

I will never check that little box again.

I obviously have to reinstall and go through the whole thing all over again.

But let me take this opportunity to point out that the program would be improved significantly if User could be given the global option to set the default for just the screen color(s), and nothing else.

If you think about it, it is just asking for trouble to mix something as data-complex as TABULATION and FONT PROPERTIES in with (what I presume) most people want at all times: The colors on their screen to be always the same.

I'm going to uninstall and go through the whole thing all over again. Thanks anyway guys.
