Thousand separators in numbers

Post by boldan »

I got a nice :-) message:

Line 2 is 165644187 bytes long
Split into 33554429 bytes lines?

I would like to have these long numbers formatted with thousand separarators, so that it will make it easier to read. Something like this:

Line 2 is 165,644,187 bytes long
Split into 33,554,429 byte lines?

And talking about large numbers..

On the bottom bar there are 2 fields that show the line number and the column number of the pointer. They ONLY have room for 7 digits, with no thousand separators. I suggest to make the fields longer (to allow up to 9 digits) and the thousand separators as well.

Seems sensible.
Maybe it could follow the system settings for "Thousand Separator" (Control Panel -> Regional settings)

Agreed bveldkamp, it should use the locale specific settings, to keep everyone happy.

I'm odd. I like to use the apostrophe. It doesn't denote a break in a sentence or list. It's in there to hold a place for what we could write in words.

A list:
100100
200
300500
In a sentence as a list using comma
100,100,200,300,500
In a sentence as a list using apostrophe
100'100,200,300'500
I know you would normally put spaces after the comma but I did that as an extreme example. The problem is that most fonts place the ' to close to neighbouring characters. It get's even more confusing between USA,UK,Aust et.al versus most European countries who reverse the usage of the full stop (period, epsillon) and the comma.
One thousand point nine five
1,000.95 (US...)
1.000,95 (Europe...)
