File recovery?

Post by talleyrand »

Having been on this board a bit I'm sure I know the answer but I had just written a sizable document in textpad without ever saving it. I noticed my music stopped which should have warned me to save immediately but instead I click over to winamp and stare dumbly at it. Hmmm, it shows play, hard drive shouldn't have to spin up, this is weird. Let's push the button again. Poof! Not even a blue screen but just straight to black and reboot. Event viewer says I've rebooted from a bug check. Great. Now the question, I know in other editors, vi for example, a temporary file is created while you're editing. Any chance I'm going to find one if I go poking around in temp directories or anywhere? I didn't find anything under "backup file" or "temporary file." I haven't opened TP in case opening it will kibosh the temp stuff so the sooner I hear that I'm hosed, the sooner I can get on with trying to recreate all that stuff. Ick!

Save and save often. How many times have I chanted that mantra to users?

hi talleyrand......sorry to hear about that.

I am sure you know, but in this period of grief, sometimes the simplest things get forgotten. If any backups were being made, they would be in the folder defined in Configure, Preferences, File Folders. Hope you find it there.

While you are here, perhaps remember to go to the tree option for Backup, and activate that to do auto backups if not checked now. Again, the horse is gone, too late to lock the barn.

But I am pretty sure that the OS has not made a backup.
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob

T,

Any chance you "viewed in browser"? I know that a temp file of such a view gets saved.
Best Wishes!
