File Open dialog lists files in random order?

Post by SteveH2 »

I recently noticed that when I click File >> Open, the filelist in whatever folder I'm viewing is no longer sorted in order by filename (it always was, until today). I can't tell what order it's in....it appears to be random. This is a problem in folders that contain a lot of files & other folders, although I can always go to Windows Explorer to find the file quickly, and open it from there.

I thought it might be Windows doing this, but a File >> Open dialog in Microsoft Word still lists the files in order. Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it? I tried restarting TextPad and that didn't help.

BTW, I'm running TextPad 4.7 on Windows XP.

Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you are in the List view vs. the Details view.

In the File Open box, check the icons in the upper right corner.
The one to the extrem right is Details. The one to the immediate left of Details button is the List. button.

I would bet that you have List active. If that is the case, it uses the last Sort method selected. The Sort method ic changed using the Details button.

When Details is active, vs. List, you can sort on any column by clciking on the column. Clicking again on the same column toggles between ascending/descending order.

Everyone works differently, but I almost always find the Details option better because so much more info is available. For example, scroll to the right and you will see Attributes. Makes it easy to sort by Date, Attribute, Name, File Type, etc.

I haven't checked, but the TextPad Open Details/List view and column contents may be controlled by the View options set for Windows Explore. Not a problem for me because I set Explore as the default for Explore anyway.

Hope this was helpful...............good luck,
Bob

Bob, thanks for the reply...you were right on the money. I was in 'List'... I went to 'Details', re-sorted on the Name column, and now it's also sorted that way when I go back to 'List'.

I'd sort of forgotten that those options were available in File >> Open dialog boxes, as well as Windows Explorer. I've got to look around at all those icons more often!

One last question...I did accidentally post this twice, and you commented on my duplicate post that it should be deleted. Can I do this, or was that a request for the board monitor? I'm new to the TextPad forums, and if there's a way to delete I couldn't find it.

Thanks again for the help, and apologies to all for the double post!

Hey, we all do it and then, no apologies needed........... :D

You should be able to delete it yourself unless you have a poll that has been voted on. I am not sure about what happens if anyone has just replied. Why don't you try it and we can find out.

1. Try to delete the entire message by clicking on the X just above the message, next to the button for Edit.
2. If you cannot delete because it has a reply, let me know here, and I will delete my reply, and notify you here again.
3. Then you can try to delete again.

If you can delete at step 1 that will be great and in either case we will know the answer.

Good luck
