Navigating to a PARTICULAR COLUMN (Horizontal Scrolling)

Post by no.cache »

Hi Guys,

Before I post a poll on this I thought I'd better verify that this feature isn't one that Textpad already has. I'm sure we've all been here at one point:

You have a fixed pitch document class that you've created (eg. tabbed columns, each line representing one record for import into a database, as in my particular case) and it's a whopper: Your columns have to be generous (or do all of them? hmmm) because some of the data in any one tab position (field) can get lengthy, and you have a bunch of these strung far out into the galaxy with tab positions like 1,015 and 2,250 etc.

Does Textpad have a User-Defined Shortcut option for, er, "leaping" to one particular column position? And then, since inspiration took me whilst* I was composing, there's that hmmm, namely:

Can I be paroled of the dread one-tab setting for every column and customize varying tab positions based upon my document class?

Some of these tab positions have one miserable digit in them — needlessly buffering the surrounding data 50 blank cursor spaces off the screen on either side (deep Galaxy). If I could customize these, I might buffer that little guy by, oh, 5 spaces, knowing he'll never need more than one space for his one digit. And then lastly, related to my first question:

Is there any kind of, er, smooth horizontal scroll option available? We have PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN for vertical — anything available for SCREEN LEFT or SCREEN RIGHT? Something like that?

Thanks everyone.

Press Ctrl-G, then select "Column" and enter the number.

Go to Configure - Preferences - Document Classes - Yourdocumentclass - Tabulation
There is a box called "Tab stops".
You can set tabstops on the columns you like.

Thanks MG . . . so I gather Textpad doesn't have some kind of a more graceful horizontal scroll — a user defined F~ key, for example that would just get you over by x number of columns?

Sorry, I overlooked your third question.

In my Textpad,
PageRight command is assigned to Ctrl-Pagedown and
PageLeft command is assigned to Ctrl-Pageup.

Might be different depending on Keystroke compatibility mode or personal settings of Keyboard assignments...

Very cool MG! It took me forever to find the feature but it works great. Thanks.
