cannot install Textpad 4.6 without Internet Explorer

Installation of Textpad 4.6 stops with the message
1643: setup requires a newer version of WinInet.dll. You may need ...
Internet Explorer 3.02 ...
But I am using Mozilla for browsing and don't want to download and
install a huge Internet Explorer 6.x file + service pack just to get 1
little DLL.
Also, your Installation Instructions say that I need
COMCTL32.DLL >= 4.70,
but the given link does not lead to that file. Searching for
COMCTL32.DLL in Microsoft's download center I find a file COM32UPD.EXE,
but this is for Win95 only, and I have NT4.

TextPad isn't supported on Windows NT, unless service pack 6 is installed. If you haven't already done so, please install this, and then try installing TextPad again.

Don't bother downloading Acrobat Reader 6 either... it needs IE as well. I can't believe we are forced to install a virus just to install other apps.

Hi,
nice to know that there are others who don't want IE, but the sad fact is, I just cannot install Textpad at all. Period. Or is there another solution than downloading and installing IE + service pack?

Most corporations require that applications be Windows Compliant, before they will buy them. Included in Microsoft's specifications for Windows Compliance is the requirement to use the Microsoft Installer (MSI), which makes it easier for administrators to manage installations in large networks. Howewver, MSI is not easy to use, so most software developers use InstallShield, or Wise to create their MSI setups. Whichever method is used, the whole process is extremely tedious and error-prone, and requires testing on all the different versions of MS Windows. This testing requirement is a major disincentive to provide an alternative installation method for those systems that cannot support MSI, for whatever reason. Furthermore, many of the components of current versions of Windows are dependent on Internet Explorer, so it is an integral part of the system, even if it's not used for web browsing. Hence, the number of systems that need IE before TextPad will install is too small (and always reducing) to make it worthwhile investing in an alternative installation system.

If all else fails, simply install TextPad on a supported system, then copy its installation folder to the unsupported system. Uninstalling is then a matter of deleting that folder, and using Regedit to delete the following key from the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Helios\TextPad 4

Yes I did that Copy Thing (even to a CD-ROM to carry TextPad to some University institutes, where I have not the rights to install my own Programm) and it works very well !!

It would be the easiest way - i can tell ...
