Thanks - "Close" was not in the "standard" buttons for that toolbar, which is odd, as it has new, open and save, but was able to drag it from another set of toolbar options, so problem solved. Cheers

I have exactly the same problem with v5. V4 opened files by simply double-clicking on the file. A painful workaround is to right click on the file and then select Textpad from the shortcut mouse menu......but this involves using a mouse! Yes, not good when one has paid for the software, is it? Textpad 5 can't open files directly
I have my .txt files associated to Textpad. Since upgrading to 5 from 4, if I click on a .txt file, Textpad opens but says it can't find the file. I have Textpad as a Send To shortcut, that works, but it's a pain in the neck having to do this every time. Upgraded in situ first, then uninstalled it ...
