Make TextPad the default text editor

Hi;

I have 5.0.2 on XP SP2 and Office 2003 Student and Teacher, AutoCAD 2004 and that's about it.

Why will TextPad not open .txt files as the default editor. I read a post that links to the solution, but the link is dead. I am reluctant to mess with any DDE entries in my registry until I get some verification first.

Can anyone help me with this? TextPad 4 - is not an issue as I had a virus last month and had to do a clean install.

I have purchased this program, but I can't remember when. I do have a license key.

You can select "Configure->Preferences" on the menu using textpad, then click on "Associated files", select .txt in the New extension drop down box and click the Add button. You can also make this change from Windows Explorer. I currently use Windows Vista, but if i remember correctly you select "Folder options" from the Tools menu using windows explorer, then there should be a Tab (the last one to the right) where you see all the assications and can change them as well. Then you can repeat these steps for other extensions you want opened in Textpad.

You can also download the txplink add-on from this site which is a file that can be used to replace the original notepad.exe. The only thing txplink does is to start Textpad so everytime a program start notepad.exe then notepad.exe will start textpad instead of starting the original Windows notepad.exe. In that case you don't need to change any of the associations.

Thank you for the response. I reassociated all of my files when I completed the clean install.

When I double click to open a .txt file, TextPad opens, but the file does not open in TextPad.

If I Right Click > Open, TextPad opens, but the file does not open in TextPad.

If I Right Click > TextPad, TextPad opens with the file open.

If I Right Click > Open With > TextPad, TextPad opens with the file open, but I get an error beep. That beep you get when you click like mad in a windows program that refuses to cooperate.

So, I am not sure what is going on here, but I would love to correct it. It's more of an inconvenience than anything. I have just gotten into the habit of Right Click > Textpad.

Also are you logged on as an administrator?

I think i read some posts about similar issues in thie forum, but cannot remember the details. I never had any such problem as you describe so not exactly sure why this happen. I'll see if i find anything and maybe some other have some tips as well.

Could you check the following entries in registry to see if those are the same as shown below?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TextPad.txt\shell\open\command
(Default) = "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe" -s

*You should find similar entries for other associated extension as well like "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TextPad.ini\shell\open\command" and so on, but let's see if it's possible to make .txt work fine first.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\TextPad.exe\shell\open\command
(Default) = "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe" -s "%1"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\TextPad.exe\shell\edit\command
(Default) = "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe" -s "%1"

If you installed textpad into another directory then the default directory then it won't necessary be "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\...." though. Is the Textpad 5.03 installation a new install or did you upgrade from another version of textpad? Or did you install/uninstall another version of textpad before you installed 5.03? Why not install version 5.2? The first 5.x releases had pretty many bugs.

That got it. I changed the first key listed in your post. I am going to try to get the admins here to post this. It's not even on the textpad faq's. This seems to be a critical one to me.

Glad to hear you solved the problem. Just curious.....did you miss this entry completely or did you find it, but the value was different?
When you associate files using textpad this should have been set without the need to edit the registry like this.
Mayby you have some security product installed or the computer is a member of a domain with some GPO's that prevent this operation? I don't know, but i never had this problem on my computers. Also you could check the release notes and consider a upgrade to 5.2 since there been a lot of bugs in the first 5.x releases.
