word wrap - wraps at apostrophe

Hi there,

I'm wondering if there's a way to stop Textpad from wrapping a word at an apostrophe. For example, instead of:

"The purple dog can't
sleep."

I get:

"The purple dog can
't sleep."

Thanks much for any suggestions you have.

Which version of TextPad are you using?

I'm using 5.2.0.

I don't see this problem. What is the type of file? In what font are displaying? Are you certain there is no space before the apostrophe? Did you type the text or did you copy and paste it from somewhere else?

I'm using Courier New, and nope, no space before the apostrophe. As you can see in the second screenshot, when I adjust the window width it displays correctly:

I typed the text directly into Textpad.

I'm afraid I can't duplicate it no matter what I try. I tried various combinations of document class options and couldn't get it to happen. I didn't ask what OS version you are on. You didn't say what the file type is, but I'm guessing that you probably aren't changing a lot of document class options. I tested with an unnamed document and changing the default document class options -- word wrap, wrap at column, font. I did not try any of the more esoteric things like syntax highlighting. When I switched to Courier New, my apostrophes looked like yours.

AFAICT, the syntax definition file (even if you are using one) isn't documented as affecting word wrapping, just selecting and stepping. It would make sense if it did affect wrapping though. Do you use a syntax definition file? I don't -- word wrapping seems to be based solely on spaces, not on "characters in words" -- but I do see that double-clicking a word breaks at an apostrophe unless I add the apostrophe to "other characters in words". Does making that change help your situation?

Beyond that, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

I couldn't reproduce it either. But I do want to know what Max is going to do to the woman in the big SUV.

My sympathies are with MAX.

Aha - okay.

I tried it with a plain text file in Textpad and couldn't re-create the problem. So it must be the syntax definition file I'm using. Ah well. Thanks very much for your help in any case.

Interesting. That's a good one to know.
