The built-in Help in TextPad says to add a tool to go to configure->preferences->tools

But in my configure->preferences there IS NO Tools. What's going on? How do I add tools?

hmm

I can't write to registry on this computer -- maybe that's why. When i ran setup there were a few errors trying to do stuff in the registry. However, I've been using this copy of textpad for a long time and everything else works perfectly.

If you don't have the "Tools" option at all that's really strange. For the installation of Textpad i presume you have to do that as an administrator (member of the Administrators group or the administrator user). I never installed textpad with a user that is not an administrator, but i'm sure that could cause some problems. If the "Tools" option is missing and you got some errors during the installation i would suggest you uninstall and reinstall textpad as an administrator before further troubleshooting (unless you already did that). In any case if you got some errors during the installation it might be a good idea trying to reinstall without getting any errors and in case or errors try to solve that. If you cannot write to registry in general then it's a windows problem and not textpad.

Do you have problems writing to registry in general on that computer? In that case are you talking about under HKLM or HKCU? Also what version of Textpad do you use? Do you use Windows 2000, XP or Vista?

Not sure whether I generally have problems writing to registry. I assumed I did when textpad complained but the error might have had to do with overwriting previous textpad installations' registry entries. I tried reinstalling but didn't get those errrors this time so I'm not sure. Perhaps I will get those errors again after a reboot. I will let you know tomorrow. Will also be able to check then whether its HKLM or HKCU.

I would prefer to use Textpad 4.7 but I have this problem w/ both 4.7 and 5.2. I installed both multiple times but I never have configure->preferences->tools.

I'm on Windows XP Professional.

I will try to get Admin privilege tomorrow, too.

There been several issues upgrading from 4.x to 5.x, but not sure if this is what you did when you got some errors. I found it best to uninstall 4.x and then install 5.x.
