ALWAYS SAVING FILES AS .txt

Hello,
Can anyone help?
I'm using Textpad to edit some Matlab code. I have successfully setup the matlab syntax highlighting so that when I want to do a 'Save As', to save the file with a different file name, the option 'Save as type: Matlab (*.m)' is available. The problem is, even if I stipulate to save as 'Matlab (*.m)', Textpad is saving the file as a .txt file.
The file is then fundamentally changed to a text file, & I can't even 'rename' the file in a 'My Computer' window to change it back to a '.m' !!!
Since it is no longer recognised as a matlab file, the syntax is no longer highlighted as it would be if it were a .m. The whole code immediately changes to being all plain black text.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone know how to stop Textpad doing this ???
Thank you
