configure colors

Hi,
I am new to TextPad and am trying to get different colors in my code to appear. I have gone to configure/ preferences/ document classes/ default/ color and I have tried to adjust the colors for different items. I can adjust the colors of some things like the 'current line' and 'text'. However, it does not seem to recognize the color settings for brackets and numbers and keywords. They all follow the text setting. So, I can make all the characters black or pink or red but there is no color differentiation between different types of characters. I am using Vista--could this be a problem?
