A couple irritations...

When I have the file explorer window open, is there any way to get this to point at the directory that I initially opened the first document under? It currently defaults to My Documents. Any workarounds to this would be greatly appreciated.

Configure/Preferences/General
Put check mark in "Working folder follows active document".
But this is the ACTIVE document, not the first one opened. Just make the first document the active one, then open the File browser.

Hi,
tried your suggestion and it doesnt work for me. (5.0.3).
This settings does make a difference when you go to open a new file (File - Open), the folder it opens is the folder of the currently delected document. However it doesnt seem to affect the explorer window.

What do you mean by "explorer window."?
How are you opening it?

Do you mean the View | Explorer window? AFAIK there's no way to control the selected directory for that one.
When starting TextPad, it defaults to the Startup folder which can be changed here: Configure | Preferences | Folders
