I've turned off (I think) the document selector but the tile options are still not showing. I need to be able to look at two files side by side and I can't.

Turn off document tabs: View | Document Tabs.
Is this a new feature?

In version 4.73, I didn't have to disable tabs. Is this an "upgrade"?

I agree - this is incredibly frustrating. I am rapidly losing the will to live. Why would such a "feature" be added?
Along with the document tabs opening new documents at the left hand side I am falling out of love with Textpad.
Is a solution/work around in the pipe line or are these here to stay?

I don't understand the frustration. Once you turn them off, if you really don't like them, these features shouldn't bother you again. In the meantime, many of us find them useful enhancements to the multiple document interface. I'm ambivalent; but I'm glad they're there when I want them and I don't mind the "hassle" of turning them off if I decide they're in the way--even when I forget how (which is why I'm here).
If it's surprise that bothers you, you might consider avoiding upgrades altogether.
I am falling out of love with Textpad
If you've truly "fallen in love" with someone, it seems to me you'd take joy in discovering new things about her and you'd be willing to put up with a few characteristics that you don't yet understand.

But hey, maybe that's just me; I freely acknowledge that my notion of love isn't necessarily the cultural norm.

Is this an "upgrade"?

You will be able to tile documents with document tabs turned on, in the next maintenance upgrade, and you won't have to wait too long for it.

Thanks, helios, for the feedback.
Although I don't use tabs, it is still good to know that work on textpad is going on.

Great!
I almost changed to a different text editor. Let's hope the maintenance release will be out quit soon.

Excellent. Thanks. I will then move from 4.7.3.

Well I've installed 5.2, and its not quite as good as 4.7 when tiling with tabs - it does what it says it does, but I'm not conviced of its value. I'll probably stick with 4.7.
