Somehow I managed to configure textpad so that now my spaces show up as tabs. Can someone tell me what I did and how to undo it?

Configure->Preferences->Document Classes->Default->Tabulation

Look at your default settings here. You may have to do the same for custom document classes.

Well, Bill, I'm afraid I don't get it. If I go to default->tabulation I see
default tab spacing - 8
indent size - 8
convert new tabs to spaces - unchecked
convert existing tabs to spaces when saving files - unchecked
I have no tabstops set
