Try TextMate (from www.macromates.com). I used to program in TextPad on windows until I found TextMate. There are a lot of tutorials (video podcasts) to help you get started - which are enourmously helpful because of all the shortcuts and code templates built in to it which - make life much easier. Its great for everything from C, Objective-C and C++ to Latex, HTML, CSS, Javascript (and numerous others), or just plain simple text editing.

Believe me, TextMate is far better than TextPad, and I used to love TextPad! Shame they don't have a windows port of it!

You can actually run TextPad on a Mac using Crossover. I've used this in the past and it actually worked better than my XP machine when 5.X was first introduced.

I know that TextMate has got a huge following on the Mac but I never got it although I did register when 1.5 came out. There is a Windows equivalent knocking about and it's called E Text Editor. I don't know much about it other than it uses TextMate bundles.

If I were recommending a TextPad equivalent to an OS X user I think I would now go Smultron. The Mac is blessed with a great range of text editors so I would not get hung up on retaining TextPad unless you have to.

There are a couple of other posts that may be useful - see Wanted for MAC and TextPad and MACs.

I'm amazed that only 3 people took the poll, and none of them said 'yes'. Unfortunately I saw it too late apparently, as I would have put in a yes for sure.

I've seen all the suggestions for replacements to be used on a Mac, but the truth is that none of them suffice. Of all the editors I've tested on the Mac, I feel TextWrangler is the best, but it still isn't anywhere near an equivalent.

The Crossover solution has been tried too, but it is buggy, and I can't even make my changes to the TextPad preferences stick.

One major thing I like in TextPad, I described here. There is just no other editor that does that.

So, can I please give one more vote for "please, please, please, make a version of TextPad for the Mac"? Even though I already paid for a license for my Windows version, I'd happily pay again if I could have it on the Mac.

I would agree. When editing large numbers of lines that feature is a great time saver. I don’t think I have seen it in any other Windows editor either.

The other thing that I relied on in TextPad is that moving down one line hen already on the last line will move to the last character. Windows editors seem to vary in the behaviour which can be confusing but in OS X every editor or text field will follow this convention which is nice to be able to rely on.

Thanks, I hadn't tested that option yet, but it's certainly handy.
