In the situation where I open 4 different Workspaces in separate instances of TP and when finshed working close each, there appears under File>Workspaces, in the list of Workspaces previously opened, only the first of the four. Obviously this means that I must do a lot more work to get set up again the next day than I would have if all the workspaces were listed.

Agreed. It's a pain. In the last instance of TextPad you close, cycle through all the workspaces you want to be at the top of the list the next time you start the machine. It's tedious, but it avoids the need to remember which ones were open the last time.
