I like a lot the way Word allows to select a rectangular block of text, pressing ALT and keeping it pressed while you move the mouse.
Editing the HEX values of binary files can be useful.

I believe you are looking for Block Select Mode in your first request.
Hex editing capabilites is an oft-requested feature. Feel free to find the official thread showing the priorities as specified by us, the users of TextPad (search for author Jeffy I believe) and vote in the appropriate thread on hex editing.

Block Select mode can be activated by holding down the ALT key in TextPad as well (at least it does for me!)
