trouble with java/TP

Hi all,
I looked through the forums, but didnt find my question answered exactly. Basically very simple problem. I installed sdk1.5 to the default install option, then installed TP to the default install location also, and for soem reason I cannot save a file as a .java file, everything is .txt. The java tools appear under the menu within TP no problem, but if i create a file, save it as a .java file, then try to reopen it later, it opens by default in notepad, thinking it's a text file. when i navigate to said file within TP and try to open, it says the path is inaccessible. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
