A Writer's Request

Post by dylan_k »

Hello:

First off, I should say that I am a writer, not a programmer. Perhaps this means that TextPad is not for me, but I don't think so. You all probably know what a nightmare it is to go from a Word document straight to the web... and so, I use TextPad.

It is a wonderful text editor, but there are some word-processing type things that I would really like to see implimented -- such as the highlighting of spelling and grammatical mistakes as I type.

The other thing i would love to see is an editable document map. headings create entries in the map, which can be dragged around and repositioned quickly and easily.

Can this be done? is it already out there? thanks for lsitening.

TextPad will probably never have those types of features. TestPad is a text processing tool that is primarily used by programmers. There are others who also use it for basic notepad tools but they understand that the typical word processing features do not exist.

Check out OpenOffice for an inexpensive (FREE) substitute for Microsoft Office Suite. Powerful, and inexpensive, but certainly not as simple to use as TextPad.
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob

thanks for the tip to OpenOffice, but, before I download it, I would like to know... will it give me what I want? I have a limited set of needs:

1. spelling/grammar check while I write (i.e. highlighted mistakes)
2. a document map while I write
3. a very simple way to set headings, links, quotes, and lists
4. VERY CLEAN HTML OUTPUT

thanks so much for being helpful

The basic objects you want are there. But the qualifications will be your call.
1. spelling/grammar check while I write (i.e. highlighted mistakes)
Built in spell/grammar checking
2. a document map while I write
Not sure what you mean
3. a very simple way to set headings, links, quotes, and lists
Styles that can be saved/applied
4. VERY CLEAN HTML OUTPUT
Writing and saving in HTML is a built in option. VERY CLEAN is your call.

This is a forum for TextPad. I am just making a suggestion for you for a powerful, inexpensive Word Processing tool. Don't want to get into evaluation discussions here.

You may want to check out the Open Office Write forum at: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=2
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob
