Can I click on a file like cust.txt and see the contents of this file in a View pane? without actually having to open the file?
I have a lot of files I just need to browse their contents this way - I don't want to have to open all of them as there are hundreds...

Try PowerDesk:

Works good for me. Replacement for Explore, many more features.

There's also a free add-on for Explorer called
FileTip to preview files. Place the mouse over a file and you get a pop-up/file tip, you can configure the number of lines and columns it shows and for which file endings it works. HTH

Here is an English page for FileTip:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,25784,00.asp
But the English download requires a subscription. The Danish one is free.
FileTip supports text files, executables, shortcuts, Zip files, bitmaps, icons, animated cursors, AVI files, and HTML files. Different types of information are provided for each file type. For example, the Zip file ToolTip displays the file count and the names of the first five files in the archive, and the shortcut ToolTip gives the path to which the shortcut points. To distinguish ToolTips created by FileTip from other ToolTips, FileTip prefixes the ToolTip text with the heading FileTip:. A configuration utility lets you add extensions to different file types. Also, the utility's open architecture enables developers to add new FileTip extension DLLs without changing FileTip itself.
