Status bar very wide

I'm having problems with the status indicators on the status bar. The problem is that the status bar is very wide and I have to make the Textpad window very wide as well to see them. For instance, the first indicator (line number) isn't visible at all until the main window is 5 or 6 toolbar button widths wider than the Standard toolbar. I'd like to have the main window just wide enough to have the Standard toolbar on single line but then I can't see any of the status indicators. Is there any way to make the status bar narrower? Thanks.
P.S. I suspect the problem is that the status bar box where tool tips show up has a minimum size that's tied to the screen size. I run dual 1600x1200 monitors in a horizontal configuration, so many apps think I have a 3200 pixel wide display. I don't have this problem on my 1400x1050 pixel laptop display.
