Perl - NET::AOLIM

Has anyone had any success using NET-AOLIM, version 1.4 or 1.5 in Windows environment?
I have been struggling for weeks to run example.pl. I have submitted a bug report to CPAN, and contacted the author, but most feedback that I get is that it works OK in unix and mac. I think it might be helpful to know about a successful run in Windows.
I have tried this using WIN98SE and WIN98ME with perl 5.8.0 and NET-AOLIM 1.5. I believe that I have isolated the cause to multiple runs of the sub send_sflap_packet routine.
I suppose this is further complicated by the fact that this is my first in-depth working inside perl, but I am working with the standard module without modifications. Some variables like login timeouts, pauses, etc. have been tweaked from 0 to unlimited and in-between, trying to see if they would have an impact on running.
