This exists in another tool I use and I often find myself wishing it was in Textpad - from the main menu one selects "Window->Close All Except Active" and all the files except the one currently being edited close (with appropriate save/discard dialog boxes as required)

How about making a macro and ssign a hot key to the macro?

A. Start from active document

B. Run the following macro:

1. Select All
2. Copy to clipboard
4. Close All
5. File New
6. Paste from clipboard

I think that the problem with your proposed solution is that filename and path information will be lost.
