Try this:
- Close TextPad.
- Put a temp.txt file in your "All Users" desktop (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop).
- Minimize all applications, and double click on temp.txt, which is now on the desktop.
- TextPad opens the document just fine.
- Close temp.txt, but leave TextPad open.
- Select File-->Open...
- Navigate to the Desktop (not the folder, the actual desktop. Keep pressing the "directory up arrow" in the dialog)
- Double click on temp.txt. It gives the following error:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\Desktop\temp.txt

This file does not exist.

Create the file?

Hi Jeffy. That does not surprise me. It sounds correct to me when I think about it. I don't think it's a bug. A bold reading of your error message indicates the path that includes \YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\, not \All Users\. There is no common desktop.

By putting the file in All Users, you end up creating a shortcut on each desktop to the temp.txt file, but remember that there is no Common Desktop contents, only shortcuts. This shortcut should point to your own desktop. By having this All Users shortcut, everyone can have their own individual temp.txt file, but the shortcut only has to be created once by Admin.

If you want a common temp.txt file that everyone can share, then you could perhaps move it to Shared Docs folder?

Jeffy, what happens if you do the same thing but use Notepad (aargh!) instead of Textpad?

Yes, it does work both ways in Notepad. WordPad, too.
