Switch Between Hex and Text Display And Edit in Hex

Post by Lawrence Dol »

I would love to be able to switch any document between hex and text displays with a menu option or a keystroke.

Also, how about being able to edit in Hex mode?

I'd like to see this feature too.
To get a quick workaround I made a small tool to inject characters to a special position in the 'background" instance of the file I want to hex-edit. Now I found that this is not possible. I have to close the file first. May be I use a wrong set of options but I guess the backgrund instance is hard write-protected. That should be overcome. TextPad should behave like the Dev-c editor i.e. : As soon as the backgrund instance is changed, the editor prompts for reloading.
Would be fine to find this an the hex-edit feature in one of the nexed releases.

Check your tool settings because I was able to open a text file in TP, used xvi32 on it, added some non-printing characters saved it and when TP regained focus, it prompted me to reload it.

Hex-Edit

The reload function only affects ascii files. Files opened in hex-mode are obviously write protected. This is an unnecessary restriction. People who use TextPad (rather than wordpad) know what they are doing.

Well now I feel sheepish. Yes, I can confirm that if the file is actually opened in binary mode, it cannot be modified outside TP.

Switching between text and hex view / edit mode

It'd be about time to have that feature!!

I keep having to resort to unwieldy and crappy Hex editors just for that?? Gimme a break!
