When you click on "File" then "Open" and the window appears to select a file, if you right click and select "TextPad" from the menu, the system will lock up.

It has happened on multiple machines running multiple versions of Windows.

Right clicking on a file in the open dialog, and then selecting TextPad, works just fine for me.

Is Configure>Preferences Allow Multiple Instances to run checked or unchcecked?

Nevermind. It doesn't make any difference, runs both ways just fine for me.

This sounds like the bad SHELLEXT.DLL problem that has not been fixed yet. Helios tried making a replacement for this DLL, but it doesn't work either. The only thing that will work is to turn off the context menu option for textpad.

This bug is not a Textpad bug, it is a bug of the Windows system used.

The same problem will happen in other programs (those that use DDE for opening themselves from context menu IIRC)...

As far as I remember, this is limited to systems before Win2K...

This problem is caused by a bug in Windows 2000 and XP, which Microsoft are aware of, but have declared that it will not be fixed until the next version of Windows. Therefore, we implemented a new version of shellext.dll, which does not use DDE, with TextPad 4.7.0. If it does not seem to solve the problem, check that its version is 1.0.3.0.

Note that once Explorer has loaded this DLL, it cannot be replaced until Windows is rebooted.
