Ability to edit binary files.

Ability to switch between binary and text views. Not all files with a "binary" extensions are necessarily binary files. And I've opened binary files, but TextPad thinks they are text files. I know there is an option for defining binary extensions in preferences, but it would be much easier to be able to just switch modes. Also would be nice to be able to see and edit hex codes on some text files.

While we are on binary files I've noticed TextPad can compare them just as well as text files. But if you have two binary files open and click the compare button, the file names are not placed in the First File and Second File boxes, like the text files that are open are. You have to browse to the binary files.

Suggestion:
Post separate enhancement suggestions in separate posts so that they can be voted separately.

Sorry, but I was posting a number of enhancement suggestions, and wanted to have the poll on each one. The poll was a pain to set up for every suggestion, so I lumped similar suggestions together. Thanks for your comments. Seems like this has been the most popular of my suggestions.

I agree with CodeBase, please make separate polls, one for each specific suggestion. We want to provide inputs, but make them clear for voting. Good ideas, keep them coming!

Thanks for the head's up, s_reynisson, I just backed this in full.

I definitely support editing of binary files. Given how well TextPad already supports them, it shouldn't be difficult to add this feature.

I do have one caveat: although I want to be able to change bytes in a binary file, I don't need to be able to insert bytes. That would certainly make implementation easier, and shouldn't hit performance.

I would also say that a certain amount of effort should be required to change to binary edit mode. In other words, you don't want to enter binary edit mode by accident.

BTW: One reason this is necessary is that security "enhancements" mean disk editors no longer do the job under Windows XP. And I really hate my "Start Menu" being labelled "Start"...
