OT "New" icon that changes color after visit like

Apologies for taking advantage of this rich pool of Java gurus!
You know the "new" that people place on their home pages to indicate new material on their sites? I would like to be able to have such a thing on a page on my site but which say used a folder to indicate a new item and that folder changed color after the page was visited...pretty much like a "read topic" on this forum.
Is such a thing as this available?
