Can TP 4.5 perform CHARACTER COUNTS?

Just wondering because I seem to be purchasing alot of books <grin> on half.com and I'd love to be able to have something within Textpad that _counts_ all of those bloody spaces & characters for feedback posts (limited to 80 characters).
Oh hey, I just thought of something . . . oh, no. I was about to answer my own question (look at the bottom of Textpad to see where your character count is duh) but that wouldn't work with a proportional font, would it?
Or would it? Could someone let me know? Thanks!
