can anyone tell me the difference between the ANSI and ASCII character sets?

ANSI is a standards-setting body. ASCII is one of their standards.

Using ASCII will get you into the House of Ill Compute ...

The ascii standard characters are only in the range 0 .. 127. The ansi set expands this range.
