default sort of files in the Open File(s) window - win2k

My apologies if this is more an OS type question.
I recently had my OS at work changed to Win2k from NT. In getting rid of all the things about Windows that I hate, and getting it to work the way I like, I seem to have changed the default sort order of the Open Files window to "type" - Descending. So, each time I want to open a file, I have to change to the "details" view, click on the header of the "name" column to sort by name, then return to the "list" view.
I have no idea how I managed to change the default sort for the Open Files window, but I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to change it back.
thx
David

Hmm, try
1) going into Windows Explorer (rather than Internet Explorer),
2) open a directory with several types of files,
3) set the sort order as you like (for instance, click the gray bar labeled "Name" in the right-hand pane once or twice to see the effect),
4) navigate the drop-down menu Tools > Folder options (in some versions of Windows this is View > Options)
5) on the View tab / Advanced Settings, scroll down to "Remember each folder's settings" and uncheck it,
6) now click the button "Like the current folder".
That may change what you see in open dialogs.
As long as you're in that dialog (this is for anyone new to Windows), I use the following changes to Advanced Settings. You might like them, too:
o YES: Display compressed in alternate color
o YES: Display full path in address bar (never know when you might need to paste it into an email)
o NO: Display full path in title bar
o YES: Show hidden files and folders
o NO: Hide file extensions
o NO: Hide protected (warning: if you screw up, it ain't my fault)
o NO: Launch in separate window
o NO: Remember each folder's settings
o YES: Show pop-up
Oh yeah, on the General tab, I select both the classic desktop and classic folders. I can't stand the Web content display -- It wastes so much real estate!
Opinionated enough for ya?
HTH,
Roy

Thanks
That actually worked. I'm sure I tried that before. I just checked and unchecked the "Remember each folders's settings" a few times, pressed apply, then clicked the "Like Current Folder" button. Closed Exploder, closed TextPad. Then when I re-opened TextPad, it was the way I like it. (And someone at work told me it was a setting in the application. I had noticed that some other applications changed the sort order of the Open Files window, so I think the application can have some control over the display of the files)
About being opinionated, (and I don't mean to offend here) that is the privilege of being a geek. I'm one that uses a dvorak keyboard layout (as opposed to qwerty), and my browser of choice is Opera. I like applications that work well, and TextPad is definately one of those. When are they going to port it to Linux?
Thanks
David

David,
Re: Linux
I'm sure the developers have tried porting the C++. I'm sure it is not going to happen "vanilla." Even if they succeed, I'd bet the extra strain of supporting a new OS would eliminate any hope of time available for new feature development. -- Unless the business model were significantly different, say, Linux users being far more likely to purchase a licence. Given the relatively low install base and the free and freewheeling nature of Linux (currently), I doubt we could make a case for conversion. I welcome being proved wrong, of course.
Re: Dvorak Keyboard
You're not the only one -- Jeff Epstein (of this forum, though not now as frequently) also uses it -- though he uses the Dvorak keymap on a *standard* keyboard! Pity the coworker borrowing *his* workstation!
Me? When I actually learn to touch type, then I'll worry about unQwertyizing.
And I hope to "learn to like Opera" someday,
Roy
