can't set user account associations in winXP

I can associate files in the first administrator account that I created but I can't do that in a user account I created. Notepad opens instead for .txt files. Even when I make the user account an administrator account I can't associate files. I've tried using windows explorer's tool folder options to change the file types but all the editing buttons are greyed out. I don't want to use the adminstrator account for general use.

If you go back into Explorer and pull up the options in there and click the restore button, you may be able to then manually edit the associations. I've seen that before where things are grayed out in Explorer, and they were re-enabled after I chose to restore the file extenion.

Thanks, but that didn't work. I'm really having a lot of problems with the user account in winXP. Many programs don't run. Some don't update the registry unless I "run as" the administrator.
