Despite some claims in TextPad help files, it seems TextPad does not accept Unicode characters. You cannot type in, nor view files with Unicode characters properly. This is somewhat confirmed by looking at the available code set for all document classes (go to Configure.Preferences..., then click on any of the document classes and look in the list on the right hand side). There are invariably only two code sets available: ANSI & DOS. Meanwhile, "Encoding" box in "Save As..." dialog provide many more: ANSI, DOS, Unicode, UTF-8, .... However saving files in these encoding makes no difference (they're there perhaps as some marketing trick?).

Has anyone ever tried displaying Unicode in TextPad? If TextPad indeed cannot (yet) handle Unicode, perhaps it's time to discard the claim from documentation.

I'm using TextPad on W2000 English to read/edit Japanese text files. I set the font to MS UI Gothic (available from MS Office - http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... 85t2_3.asp) and the Script to Japanese.

It's working fine. Anyway, I got problems to open/save files with a name containing Japanese characters; does anyone have the same problem ?

It displays Unicode files without problems for me.
The MSI log files for example are in Unicode and they are displayed fine.
I'm using Win2k english SP1.
