Join Lines Behavior

All,
I'm running v4.4.2... Has Join Lines behavior changed?
I recollect that in the past if I Selected All on a multi-line file, then Ctrl-J replaced the contents with all of the contents merged into one line, with a space inserted between lines. Now I'm getting hard line breaks at the edge of the window.
Similarly with Reformat , Ctrl-Shift-J, it used to merge into one line and visible text appearing on consecutive lines. Thus if there were N "paragraphs" broken by a blank line, Reformat created N lines separated by blank lines. Today I get hard line breaks whether I'm wrapping text or not.
Can any of my fellow wrap artists confirm my recollection of the earlier join lines behavior?
Thanks,
doggydogroy
