win2k problem

I get the following message when I try to open some older text files that were downloaded a while back from a Data General mini computer. I was able to open these files fine before I upgrade from Windown NT to windows 2000, as a matter of fact, I can still do it if I use a PC with 98 or NT. Here's the messages:

'filename' contains characters that do not exist in code page 1252 (ANSI - Latin I) they will be converted to the system default character, if you click OK.

If I click OK, I get garbage that I cannot read.

Any ideas what could be causing this behavior?

Thanks
